UNIOSUN shutdown as DSS operatives, workers clash

The management of Osun State University, Osogbo on Monday shut down the ivory tower citing “notorious activities of some non-teaching members.”
This was contained in a press statement signed by the Registrar of the University, Mr Gafar Adebayo Shittu, the copy which was made available to DAILY POST.
“The Governing Council of Osun State University has approved the closure of the University with immediate effect. This is sequel to the notorious activities of some non-teaching staff members under the guise of unionism.
“These activities now pose danger to lives and properties within and around the university campuses.
“Management wishes to sincerely apologize to parents, guardians and students for any inconveniences that this closure may cause. Efforts are geared towards addressing the prevalent lawlessness.
“We urge our law abiding staff and students to remain calm and stay away from the campuses in the mean time”, the statement read
Meanwhile, workers in the University have accused operatives of Department of State Service of attacking them during a peaceful protest in solidarity with some of their union leaders who had been purportedly suspended and asked to appear before the Staff Disciplinary Committee set up by the management.
The operatives were said to have prevented some of the union leaders from gaining entry into the venue where the panel was sitting and in the process many of the staff were wounded, including the treasurer of the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), Comrade Hameed Owoh, who reportedly passed out and was rushed to the hospital.
The Secretary of the Joint Action Committee of the University Comrade Dada Kunmi in his reaction accused the University management of disregarding order by the National Industrial Court in Ibadan stopping them from constituting the Staff Disciplinary Committee.
He further accused the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Labo Popoola of victimising and harassing workers for “exposing his alleged financial recklessness and maladministration”.
